TV on mobile phones. It's just getting started. I'm Fred Fishkin with technology BootCamp, a report on gadgets and gear. AT&T and Verizon have been selling mobile phones that use Qualcomm's Flo TV. One big problem has been...the signals for the TV service have only been available in very limited markets. But the transition that just took place by the nation's broadcasters to digital TV....is freeing up space for those Flo TV signals....and VP Mike Bailey says...

"We will be able to deliver truly a nationwide network. What that means is by the end of the year, over 100 markets will be covered with our service covering over two hundred million people."

Later this year...the service will also be available on rear seat vehicle entertainment systems from Audiovox. Whether it's the latest iPhone or the Pre from Palm....or a flat panel TV...consumer spending on tech toys has not dried up. Especially when it comes to certain product categories. Consumer Electronics Association head Gary Shapiro ...

"Well certainly there's this tremendous move to netbooks, which is basically you take a smaller laptop around with you anywhere without all the bells and whistles. Obviously, video games, they go back and forth with hotness depending on what's out there. But the exercise video games are there. The smartphones, there are so many great announcements. Apple had the field for a while but Samsung is there and Palm jumping in and Blackberry has great things. So there's tremendous competition out there which is beneficial to the consumer."

More hands on with the Palm Pre. I'm Fred Fishkin with technology BootCamp, a report on gadgets and gear. So how good is that new phone from Palm designed to take on the iPhone? The simple answer is very. It is small, sleek...and intuitive. Maybe not quite as intuitive as the iPhone...but pretty close. Even though it is a little too cramped...the slide out keyboard is usable...and many will find it easier to use than the onscreen typing required on the iPhone or Blackberry Storm. It would have been better if Palm had lined up more downloadable apps for the launch...but the list is growing. At Sprint...which initially has an exclusive on the Pre.... Business Markets President Paget Alves expects big things from the little smartphone...

" And the operating system is bringing some new capabilities to the market, the ability to really blend your personal and professional life in an effective way."

While Microsoft showed off a new controller free motion sensing technology for the Xbox360....dubbed Project Natal....and Sony unveiled the new PSP Go at this month's E3 video game industry get together... Nintendo, which has been the leader of the pack... kept its focus on more fun and games for the Wii. It announced the upcoming Wii Fit Plus....that will use the existing Balance Board...and showed off a future gizmo called a Vitality Sensor...measuring your pulse and more. VP Denise Kaigler says consumers have been voting with their wallets...

"We have truly broken down the barriers between veteran gamers and casual gamers. We have made it easier and more fun and less intimidating for consumers to truly play a video game."

With Nintendo having won over many non-game players to its Wii console...thanks to its motion sensing controllers and Wii Fit Balance Board.....Microsoft is firing back with technology it calls Project Natal. It brought Steven Spielberg on stage at this month's E3 trade show....to help announce the project....which will allow game play....with no controllers at all. Xbox Communications Director Heather Snavely...

"There's something called a Project Natal sensor that will sit under your TV. It actually sees the way your body moves in 3D, it can hear your voice, it can recognize your face. So basically all you have to do is step in front of your TV screen and you jump instantly into the game and into the fun."

GM's OnStar has been around for years....connecting vehicles equipped with the technology to live operators ...who, among other things, can notify emergency operators in the event of an accident. Now, after working with the Centers for Disease Control on the types of additional data that would be valuable, OnStar will be adding what is called Injury Severity Prediction technology. OnStar president Chet Huber says...

"By doing that, if it's a severe crash, the chances of the crash victim surviving these serious events are improved by 25 percent. And so it is kind of the next step and time means everything in these crash situations."

The Science Channel has launched a new series hosted by Nar Williams...called The Science of Movies....and Williams calls it "nerd-vana"....

"The first book I ever remember checking out of the library as a kid was a making of Star Wars special effects book. And so I kind of just took it from there. I got kind of obsessed with it. My brothers and I made home movies and we were kind of obsessed with making these home-made dollies and special effects and of course, big batches of fake blood."

A solar powered lantern built to last. I'm Fred Fishkin with technology Boot Camp, a report on gadgets and gear. Solar powered outdoor lights are everywhere, and they vary greatly in quality. It's always a good idea to find out what type of batteries are used to hold a solar charge....some ni-cads often don't last very long. A company called PiSAT Solar is selling a lantern that was developed by doctors working in Africa...to replace dangerous kerosene lights. It is called the K-Light. And PiSAT's Andrew Williams says...

"It's ten to twenty hours on one charge. It's totally solar powered. So you stick the solar panel in the sun, let it charge up. It gets a one to one charge. So one hour in direct sunlight is going to give you an hour on full power, which is sixteen LEDs or two hours on half power, which is eight LEDs."

Despite all of the warnings about backing up all of the stuff on your computer...you just don't get around to it. Seagate is hoping to change that behavior with a line of hard drives called Replica. Product marketing executive director Jon van Bronkhorst...

"With Replica, all you have to do is plug it in. It works. The very first time you plug it into a new PC it comes up with a license agreement, you have to agree. Now what does it do? It backs up everything."

Including the operating system...and all of the files. Leave the drive plugged in...and it works continuously. Pricing starts at 129 dollars. Seagate is also trying to move into the family room with its Showcase line of expander for DVRs. Not all are expandable...so do some investigating before you buy. And it also is selling the FreeAgent Theater...a hard drive docking system designed to let you bring digital content onto that big screen. With skyrocketing unemployment, more people are using the Internet to create their own businesses. I'm Fred Fishkin with technology Boot Camp, a report on gadgets and gear. The folks at Intuit, makers of Quicken and QuickBooks, are seeing the phenomenon first hand. With so many people having lost their jobs in the corporate world...growing numbers are creating their own businesses. Justin Kitch, VP of Intuit's Small Business Group...says at the company's Homestead Web site division....

"We're seeing unbelievable growth numbers, up in the 60 and 70 percent increase year over year in new customers coming on to create Web sites. They're often started from the kitchen table and their only physical presence is their Web site. So that's one of the leading indicators that we see for new business starts. And people are doing that sometimes because they got laid off, or other times because they are needing to augment as a second income."

Simplifying the move to a solid state drive. I'm Fred Fishkin with technology Boot Camp, a report on gadgets and gear. Solid state drives...using flash memory instead of spinning platters....have some significant advantages over traditional hard drives. They consume less power.. and are more durable with no moving parts. On the down side, they are more expensive and don't yet have the same capacity. But Imation is taking a step towards bringing SSDs to mainstream consumers with its Solid State Drive upgrade kits. Product marketing manager Francis Abeywardane...

"I think it's going to come down and I think it's going to become mainstream. If you look at the M class, it's around 300 dollars for an upgrade kit where people can do it by themselves. So you have your laptop, so what you could do is upgrade it and make your laptop last longer."

A movie star's home theatre system, for a fraction of the price. I'm Fred Fishkin with technology Boot Camp, a report on gadgets and gear. With 42 or 50 inch LCD and plasma TVs having plummeted in price, they're pretty common in households today. Now Epson wants to convince film buffs...and TV sports fanatics....that those screens aren't big enough. It has announced an updated line of Ensemble HD kits with projectors, speakers and motorized 100 inch screens. Pricing starts at about five thousand dollars and is designed to allow do it yourselfers to handle the installation. Epson's Jason Palmer...

"The product is really meant to grow the market for front projection home cinema. And when I say home cinema, I want to clarify, it's not just home theatre like sort of your 50 inch flat panel. It's something that's truly different and truly dynamic."

An iPhone app for your healthcare spending. I'm Fred Fishkin with technology Boot Camp, a report on gadgets and gear. When it comes to health care, it is often hard for consumers to figure out what products are eligible under Flexible Spending Accounts, or which procedures might be covered by their insurance companies. Now a company called Canopy Financial, which has been working with some of the biggest health care and financial institutions...is out with a five dollar program for the iPod and iPod Touch...to help answer questions on the spot. How cool is it? Canopy CEO Vic Kashyap...

"For example, there's an application on the phone which enables a consumer in a pharmacy to take a picture of a bar code of a product such as, for example, a flu medication. And it will tell them in real time whether or not such a medicine is an eligible expense out of their health savings account. That is, can they pay for it tax free."

Predictions for the video game industry's E3 gathering. I'm Fred Fishkin with technology Boot Camp, a report on gadgets and gear. These haven't been the best of times for the video game industry....or for just about any industry. But the big video game makers and makers of the video game machines are hoping to generate excitement around E3...about to get underway in Los Angeles. At IGN.com...which is all about games...publisher Peer Schneider says...

"I think the biggest headline is likely going to be between Microsoft announcing a new motion camera for the Xbox 360 platform and then Sony rolling out a new Playstation Portable. "

Nintendo has already rolled out the new DSi handheld and announced the MotionPlus add-on for the Wii. About the new Playstation Portable, Schneider says it appears to be Sony's response to the success of the iPhone as a gaming device...along with the App Store. More on E3 in upcoming reports.
