Would Microsoft steer you wrong? Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today’s technology. The world’s biggest software company is out with the 2006 edition of Streets and Trips….and it adds some new features that finally put it on par with the competition. It is sold with or without a GPS receiver. Buying it with the receiver allows you to use a laptop as a replacement for expensive built in car navigation systems. Product manager Helen Chiang says among the new features this year….are voice prompts….

”Right after you make a turn it prompts you with the next direction and then right before you’re about to make a turn it gives you the direction again and you can repeat it as many times as you want or turn the voice off if you’re listening to music in your car.”

The package with a GPS receiver costs about 130 dollars, the software alone is about a hundred dollars less. Microsoft faces competition from Delorme…which sells the 2006 edition of Street Atlas USA with a GPS receiver for under a hundred dollars…..and from solutions from companies like ALK Technologies that can turn a Pocket PC or Smartphone into a GPS navigation device. Then there are stand alone systems for cars from Garmin, Pharos and TomTom…which now has the AOL owned MapQuest as a partner. Chiang says Microsoft has some advantages…

“Our product is one of the easiest to use on the market. The user interface is very similar to any of the other Microsoft products.”

And with the new features, Microsoft is finally on the map with the competition. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I’m Fred Fishkin.

LeapFrog launches…the Fly. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today’s technology. The electronic learning toy company that has focused most of its products on young children and early learning, hopes to broaden its popularity with what could be called a pen based computer…it calls Fly. Company president Jerry Perez…

”We have put the largest product development budget behind Fly, from a product development standpoint, and the largest marketing budget, that we’ve ever put behind a product line. And that’s because we think we have something that is so breakthrough and innovative and can really cater to the unique needs of this tween market, particularly when it comes to educational needs.” How do you describe it to a consumer that says, the Fly, what is this thing? “Well the way I describe it is to say that Fly is the first pen top computer that computer enables your handwriting to allow for a greater educational experience. It’s as if you have a personal computer with Fly. Fly will actually take you through step by step, how to do a multiplication problem, without giving you the answer. It’ll give you hints. It’ll tell you how to do it. But it won’t give you the answer and it will take you through step by step just like a good teacher would. The same is true for spelling. You know we have a spelling program, a spelling application.”

LeapFrog is placing a big bet that the Fly will fly. It sells for about a hundred dollars with add on software selling for 25 to 30 dollars. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I’m Fred Fishkin.

You don’t have to wait for the next version of Windows Mobile. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today’s technology. Palm, Microsoft and Verizon Wireless have announced the first Treo phone that will include Windows Mobile 5.0 software….but it won’t be available until early next year. In the meantime, Sprint has begun selling the PPC-6700….the first Pocket PC Phone Edition device using that software. Sprint’s Eric Martin…says the PDA phone marks a number of firsts….

“This is the first phone from Sprint that is EVDO ready. What that means is Sprint is launching its new high speed data network. It also is the first phone from Sprint that has WiFi embedded in it. And it also is a phone that has Bluetooth.”

And Sprint, says Martin, will allow customers who pay for data plans, to use the EVDO phone as a modem for laptop computers. The WiFi capability, means the device can be used to browse the Web or connect to email, at high speeds without using a cell phone connection at all. A full QWERTY keyboard slides out from the side of the phone…which also has a built in 1.3 megapixel camera and camcorder. It has a slot for mini-SD memory cards for storing pictures, music and other data. PDA phones, especially new models, tend to be pricey. This one is no exception. The PPC 6700 with a contract from Sprint….sells for about 480 dollars. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I’m Fred Fishkin.

Voice over IP, goes WiFi. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today’s technology. Phone services that let you make and receive calls over the Internet….continue to gain in popularity. They’re typically a lot cheaper than traditional phone lines. But to get it, you do have to have high speed cable or DSL Internet service. For people who have wireless networks at home and in the office, or who travel to places where wireless Internet service is available….a company called Zyxel is out with a Voice over IP phone…that is wireless. Product manager David Thompson….

”We expected it to be used in residential, for customers who are replacing their traditional phone service or accentuating their traditional phone service with a voice over IP plan who already have a wireless network and don’t want to be tied to a cord on the wall. Also…for small, medium businesses, warehouse and hospital and hospitality type markets, where they can use the WiFi phone in their corporate wireless network and take advantage of the mobility that grants them within their building. A third market would be mobile travelers, professionals on the road who can hook up to WiFi networks that they find here and there such as being able to make and receive calls from their hotel room.”

Eventually some wireless carriers may introduce cell phones that will allow you to make voice over IP calls without using up cell minutes. While the Zyxel phone uses what is called the SIP standard…making it compatible with a number of Voice Over IP service providers. One provider, BroadVoice, offers the phone to subscribers for 99 dollars. An unlimited international calling plan costs about 20 dollars a month. Unlike other voice over IP systems that typically plug into a router on a home network, users may have to tinker with settings on the WiFi phone to get it to work.

Got digital pictures and music? Maybe it’s time for network attached storage. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today’s technology. With digital cameras and music players everywhere these days….and multiple PCs in many households….companies that make hard drives see a new market in selling what’s called network attached storage to consumers. The idea is to have an external hard drive connected to a home network….where pictures, music, documents and other data can be stored and shared. Ken Higgins, senior director of Maxtor’s branded products group, says the company’s new shared storage plus solution….adds new capability as well…

“The biggest use for a network today is what, it’s for broadband access. Well as people download things like media files to watch videos or they want to download music files or rip CDs, or they want to take a lot of pictures, there’s also that need to share those files over a home network. And so this allows you to have kind of a central station in your home and have the ability to view it from any PC. Now the software we upgraded, the MSS Plus software, takes to the next step. And that is it allows you to basically share this on a network if you have one of those DMA devices attached to your TV set or your home stereo.”

Maxtor, the number two maker of hard drives, isn’t alone. Larger rival Seagate last month acquired Mirra….a company that has pioneered network attached storage devices for consumers.Bloomberg Boot Camp, I’m Fred Fishkin.

If you don’t back up your PC….you’ll be sorry. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today’s technology. From your financial data to digital photos and digital music…chances are you’ve got lots of stuff on your desktop or notebook computer…that you really wouldn’t want to lose. But hard drives….where it is all stored….eventually fail…sometimes sooner rather than later. At IBM, Chris Stakutis is chief technology officer of Tivoli continuous data protection….

”It’s almost amazing how we have become agnostic of our computer’s health. Would you think of getting in your car and not putting your seatbelt on? And you wouldn’t frankly buy a car that didn’t have air bags. Yet we walk around with our computers with this risk hanging and looming over us.”

Stakutis says many companies and individuals have learned the hard way just how necessary back-ups are. And while most of its customers are corporations, IBM is selling an affordable solution for consumers. Continuous Data Protection is different from programs that back up data onto discs ….because it does what its name implies….backs up files continuously….to a separate area of a hard drive….and to an external or network drive….

“CDs can’t hold your 60 gigabyte hard drive, so most people have just stopped doing back-ups, have completely ignored the fact that they’re at risk. Our software tries to make this transparent for you. All the time in the background when a file is saved or changed, it makes a copy for you and it versions it off to the side.”

The price…35 dollars. You can find more information and a free trial at ibm.com/Tivoli. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I’m Fred Fishkin.

Is there still hope for the tablet PC? Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today’s technology. When Microsoft came out with the Tablet edition of Windows nearly three years ago, executives were predicting that it wouldn’t be long before all notebook computers would evolve into tablets…allowing users to write on their screens. Dell …the number one PC maker…. still hasn’t bought into the concept. But it isn’t dead yet. Lenovo….which now makes the Thinkpad brand ….recently came out with its first tablet. And Gateway is out with a new model…that it calls the first mainstream Tablet PC….the M280. Director of notebook marketing Chad McDonald….says there are several reasons why tablet PCs may be ready to take off…

“I think the operating system has improved. Microsoft continues to improve upon the functionality of the operating system. So that’s one. That’s definitely helped. The other thing that’s helped, I think, on our side, I think that we’ve developed, I think just a better mainstream notebook. It’s a really solid notebook on its own, which is attractive to people. And when you add the tablet functionality, it’s even more attractive. And then lastly, the price premium has come down from what we talked about before, come down from about a five hundred dollar premium for a tablet down to about two hundred. So now we’re in a range where people are really saying is this functionality really worth two hundred dollars and people are starting to vote yes.”

While tablet PCs are still just a small percentage of overall notebook sales, McDonald says its growing. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I’m Fred Fishkin.

Protecting your computer screen from prying eyes. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today’s technology. With lots of folks doing their banking and investing online….and sometimes dealing with sensitive information at work….how do safeguard that information when you walk away from your PC? There are password solutions you can use that are built into Windows, but a company called Digital Innovations has created a device called the PC Defender Screen Lock. The company’s Stephen Kohler says…

”Let’s say you happen to be working on a confidential spreadsheet in your office or you’re working on a memo that you don’t want other people in your office or your home to see. The way it would work is, you plug a little USB drive device, very small, into a USB jack on the back of your computer. You’d carry a little round device about the size of a large quarter in your pocket. When you the user walk away from the PC, say five to ten feet away, the system will automatically close the screen you’v e been working on and bring up a screen guard if you will. And the purpose being nobody can see what you’ve been working on.”

When you return…your system is unlocked automatically. If the USB key is removed…the screen locks until it is put back…or until you type in a back up password. The PC Defender is part of a new line of products the company calls SecurityDR. It sells for about thirty dollars. Digital Innovations is best known for its SkipDr line of devices for repairing optical discs. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I’m Fred Fishkin.

”We’re picking the people and products that we think are really changing the world. Everything from inventors working on new types of solar energy to new breakthroughs in consumer products that you can buy today.”

Among those being honored are Hugh Herr at MIT’s Media Lab who has created a microprocessor controlled artificial knee….and John Donoghue at Brown University….who has developed a system called BrainGate…

”Which is literally an implantable chip that allows people that are severely handicapped, paralyzed, to control a computer strictly through their thoughts. And the idea that you could just think about moving a cursor, moving a mechanical hand with your brain, without any motor control whatsoever, and accomplish those things, is really extraordinary.”

A free tool for wireless security. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today’s technology. Walk into any Starbucks and chances are you’ll see folks set up at tables…with their notebook PCs…connected to the Internet for business or pleasure. Lots of hotels and airports have wireless access points as well…mostly the kind that you have to pay for. If you subscribe to a wireless service on a monthly basis, there’s probably not much to worry about when it comes to security. But if you pay only when you log on….it’s easy to become a victim. Richard Rushing is chief security officer at AirDefense….a company that sells safeguards for corporate wireless networks. He says….if you are signing up for wireless access at a hotspot on the fly….you may be logging on to an access point set up by someone looking to steal your credit card or other personal data…

“And they typically occur by someone using software on a laptop pretending to be the access point.”

It’s simple enough for someone to do…and even give that access point the same name as the legitimate one you’re trying to connect to. What AirDefense is offer for free…at airdefense.net…. is a software tool that monitors for the threats….and provides alerts. Beyond that, Rushing says…

“You really should not manage your 401K or make stock investments online or do banking online from a network like this. It would be the same as talking to someone on a street corner. You never know who is around you.”

It’s also important to be running firewall software…either the one Microsoft includes with Windows…or a stronger third party program. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I’m Fred Fishkin.

Making phone calls over the Internet. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today’s technology. Companies such as Vonage have been in the business for years, selling phone services that route calls over the Internet. Big phone companies and cable operators see opportunity there too…..and even EBay is getting in on the act with its purchase of Skype. And it also spells opportunity for the largest maker of cordless phones….Uniden. President Rich Tosi….

”Currently today the voice over Internet solution has been a small box or a terminal adaptor that a consumer can buy, hook up into their broadband connection and then plug in their existing telephone. The limitation on that, however, is that you can only use that one telephone hooked up into that one particular terminal adaptor. What the Uniden cordless phone offering will allow you to do is expand the handsets. We have a 5.8 digital expandable system which will allow you to add up to nine additional handsets and everyone in the house can now be tapping into that broadband connection and making voice over Internet calls.”

Having the terminal adaptor built into the cordless phone base means less clutter. A system with a base unit and one additional handset is being sold by voice over Internet provider Packet8 or 159 dollars. An unlimited calling plan for the U.S. sells for 19.95. If you have voice over IP service with a terminal adaptor from just about any provider already, it is simple to add a standard cordless phone system….to let you use the service throughout the house. Rob Csonger is the general manager of the notebook chip business at Nvidia…

”One of the primary audiences or targets for this type of a product is a gamer. Typically, up until now, gaming parties or LAN parties, where people would take a PC to some place and then you’d network them together is increasingly popular. You see it all over the place. Desktop PCs are difficult to lug around and people in the past haven’t wanted to use a notebook because then you have to compromise on your performance. So a big … one of the reasons why this type of a notebook is becoming very, very popular is because now there’s no compromise on the performance and it’s a notebook. You fold it up, you take it.”

Dell is among the companies that will offer the chip in its high end XPS notebooks. Performance notebooks aren’t exactly thin and light…but….

”If you’re playing a game or watching a movie, you don’t want a tiny 10 or 12 inch screen.”

There are about 300 million transistors in the graphics processor….five times more than you’d find in a Pentium processor. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I’m Fred Fishkin.

Olympus updates the Evolt. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today’s technology. One of the fastest growing categories in digital camera sales….is the SLR….sinlge lens reflex…digital versions of those film cameras that had interchangeable lenses. The latest from Olympus is the Evolt E-500….an update to the E-300…with a bigger LCD screen, faster response and a variety of other new features. It’s an 8 megapixel camera…and with a two lens kit, it’s priced at under 900 dollars. Professional photographer and Olympus visionary Mark Greenberg…says the digital technology is helping to fuel the demand for higher end cameras…

”I think what’s happened today is people have found they’re all becoming better photographers. They’re all really getting bit by the photography bug. And so they’re looking for that next step up and the major camera manufacturers have addressed that with low priced SLR cameras.”

Among the unique features….a dust reduction system that shakes dust away from the image sensor. Greenberg says with any digital camera…one of the best things you can do to improve your pictures…is simply to make sure the lens is clean. Other tips…buy the biggest memory card you can afford, shoot at the highest resolution your camera allows and…

“Shoot, shoot, shoot and shoot. Don’t just be comfortable with taking that one shot and feel as though you might be bothering somebody. It’s probably your family anyway. Just keep working the angles.”

And with digital…you’re not using up film…and you only need to print the shots that work. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I’m Fred Fishkin.

Surround sound for video games…without disturbing the neighbors. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today’s technology. Video game players like to crank up the volume…to get what they might call…the full experience. That can be a problem for the neighbors of apartment dwellers….not to mention parents or others in the household. Turtle Beach is out with headphones…designed for PCs, or PlayStation or Xbox consoles…that can quiet things down. Marketing director Seth Dotterer…

”We really realized that the surround sound experience that was so compelling in the home theatre, hadn’t moved its way into PC or console gaming systems. So rather than wait for people to convince their family members or neighbors that it was okay to have that kind of surround sound when they were gaming, we put the surround sound experience into the headphones themselves with the Ear Force headphones. So there’s actually six speakers, plus two sub-woofers in each headphone set that we sell.”

Prices range from about 80 up to a hundred dollars. They will give you the same spatial effects that you hear from speakers spread around a room. How important is that for gaming?

”You can actually play your games…hear people sneaking up from behind you in the games, hear explosions from all around you. So the console games is a new market for us and we’re really excited about it.”

Turtle Beach does have competition in making surround sound headphones….but having been in the PC sound card business for years will help in getting the attention of those serious gamers. If they can hear you. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I’m Fred Fishkin.

Michael Dell…on tech support and Apple. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today’s technology. The world’s largest personal computer maker has announced a new line of luxury PCs and TVs…..aimed at gamers and other enthusiasts ….who are willing to spend more….for the best Dell has to offer. And Michael Dell says those customers…will get higher levels of service and support….

“We’ve got kind of a concierge like service from the sales experience to the support experience. Faster support response times. Dedicated cues of folks that are our very best that are set up to serve these customers.” And with the Michigan survey showing that decline in consumer satisfaction, what are you doing to address those consumers? “Well, if you study that, what you’ll see is a very small sample size and even the professor indicates it’s not indicative of the whole market. But if you look at a broad, cross section of surveys, Dell consistently is in the top rank or the leadership position.” Is there anything you need to do to address that? “There’s always things that we want to do to improve the level of service we’re providing to our customers. So, those are ongoing.”

Dell is out with a new music player…the 99 dollar DJ Ditty. It uses flash memory….but isn’t as flashy as Apple’s iPod Nano. While Michael Dell acknowledges Apple has done a good job capturing three quarters of the market…

”We’re hearing from a number of users that the kind of experience issues you have when you software in a proprietary context and try to use it in a broader environment, that’s creating an alternative market. Customers want to be able to use their music across a variety of players.”

Dell Chairman Michael Dell. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I’m Fred Fishkin.

Bill Gates…on Google…and Apple. Bloomberg Boot Camp a report on today’s technology. Under the leadership of Bill Gates….Microsoft has beaten most of its competitors over the last 30 years. But some wonder, has the company met its match in Google…

“Many things we do we are out on our own. Whether that’s tablet computing or media center. Some areas we have great competitors. Google’s quite narrow compared to what we do. But we’re going to show people that the search that you have today is nothing compared to what it can be.” Some wonder just how narrow they might be in the future. Do you see them as being your biggest threat? “It’s hard to pick any one company. Google is hot. They’re newly public. People are sort of saying, even when they do kind of a me too product, wow, that’s cool. It makes the dynamic of competition there particularly stimulating for us and we thrive on it.” Another competitor, Apple, seems to have a lock on the lion’s share of the digital music business with iPods and iTunes. What are your plans to loosen that grip? “Well that’s a market where Apple’s done a good job. Certainly more and more mobile devices are going to have music capability. It’s going to be integrated into the video game experience and the PC experience.” But do you think Microsoft might get more involved with partners in hardware design in terms of music players? Do you need to do that? “We’ve been stepping that up and absolutely you’ll see more of that.”

Bill Gates…on the Palm Deal. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today’s technology. First it was Apple deciding to use Intel processors. Now…Palm says it’s coming out with a Treo smartphone….that will use Windows Mobile…instead of the Palm operating system. How did that happen? Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates…

“We’ve been talking over a number of years about was there a way to bring together Palm’s strengths and our strengths and create a product that had the usability they’re known for but also connect it up to Outlook and Office in the classic way that only we can do.” Now does this spell a victory in any way for Microsoft over the Palm operating system in this handheld business? “Well there’ll be continued competition between devices using Windows Mobile and that Palm OS. What we have is the great hardware design and some value added software that Palm did with the Treo that runs Windows Mobile. We see this market expanding a lot. Of today’s Exchange users, only about 10 percent have mobile email. We’d like to see that go up to 80 or 90 percent. We’ve actually built in that mobile capability into Exchange. You don’t have to buy extra servers and licenses. And I think when you combine this device with that kind of a software advance, we’re going to see this market explode.” Now Motorola will also be selling a new handset. Sort of a Razr smartphone with your software. Between the new Treo and new Razr, does this mean the cell phone software business is finally taking off for Microsoft? “Well certainly we made a bet many years ago that the magic of software in the phone would be increasingly important. And we built a great team. And yes, these milestones mean that the volume is going up and that justifies the huge investment that we’re making here.”

Microsoft Chairman and Chief Software Architect Bill Gates. More with Gates in an upcoming report. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I’m Fred Fishkin.

Plugging in to that digital music. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today’s technology. There are lots of companies making all kinds of add on devices and cases for iPods and other digital music players. Some, like a company called SkullCandy, go to extremes…connecting people to their music…whatever they happen to be doing. Company President Rick Alden…

”Music is a big part of the life of those is the surf, skate, snow industry. Music’s a big part of everyone’s life. And as I exited from a previous company where they had manufactured snowboard boots and bindings, I had a number of ideas on how to integrate audio products into snowboard jackets, into snowboard helmets, into snowboard beanies. Lots of different ways to essentially make my personal day on the mountain better. And rather than just develop for myself, we ended up designing for the mass market.”

These days there are SkullCandy MP3 watches…that include voice recorders…and a line of wired backpacks. They include pouches for a cell phone and a music player…..that are wired to a built in amplifier. Speakers and a microphone are built into the straps of the pack….

“We needed these to be completely weather impervious. So we designed a very flat panel, carbon woven speaker panel, which is completely impenetrable to water. So you could pour water on top of it…ride back country snow boarding. You have no fear of damaging any of the components.”

Even if you’re just walking on campus or taking a Sunday hike. Pricing starts at about 150 dollars. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I’m Fred Fishkin.
