The Web at work. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today’s technology. It’s the leading maker of software used by employers to manage the use of the Internet by employees. And Websense is out with a series of surveys on just how often people use the Web at work…and what some of the problems are. Websense CEO John Carrington says…one of the things that may surprise some folks is that 52 percent of those surveyed said they would rather give up their morning coffee…than the Internet at work…
”What happens is, I think all of us come into the office and turn on our computer and one of the first things we do is go to the Internet. We’re looking for news, we’re looking for other information that may help us in our job. But also it starts becoming somewhat of a distraction. So part of it was to say…could you live without it? And certainly a lot of employees cannot.”
According to the survey…61 percent access personal email…and nearly the same percentage use the Web on company time for banking and making travel plans. IT professionals in companies say most employees haven’t heard of phishing scams…where they are led to fraudulent Web sites. Carrington says perpetrators are getting more sophisticated…
”They are really getting good at this. I mean you really do believe it’s the Bank of America or CitiBank that has sent you a note or a letter. If they can get hold of some information out of your contacts, by having some key loggers or something hidden in your computer, they can actually customize the email or the message to make it look exactly like it would be legitimate.”
