Will music on cell phones replace iPods? A surprising answer. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today’s technology. Sony Ericsson has been selling a new line of cellphones that take advantage of Sony’s Walkman brand. But that doesn’t mean they will take sales away from Apple….which continues to dominate the digital music business with the iPod. Sony Ericsson President Miles Flint…
“We’ve been very clear to say that Apple and iPod have not been the target. We’re all about creating a new category of device, the music mobile. And last year, if you look at our total portfolio, something like 31 million of the handsets we sold were music enabled, either as Walkman phones or with MP3 play capability. And I think that’s very close to the number of iPods that Apple sold. But that’s not really the point. The point is there’s a market for dedicated MP3 players. There’s a market for mobile music devices. And I think the two are separate and people carry both devices for different trips, for different travel, for different functions. So this is really about bringing music to the mobile platform, not about making a dent in Apple.”
And Flint has a similar view when it comes to cameras in cell phones. While they are getting better when it comes to picture quality…he doesn’t see them taking sales away from stand alone digital cameras anytime soon. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I’m Fred Fishkin.
