The chip that will run Sony’s next Playstation…can do a whole lot more. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today’s technology. It’s called the Cell processor…developed by IBM in partnership with Sony and Toshiba. It will be in the Playstation 3. And IBM has also announced it will be in some blade servers….giving them computing and graphics horsepower that they never had before. Tom Bradicich is the Chief Technology Officer at IBM’s Systems Division…
”Well one could look at the blade server as the race car and look at the Cell processor as the engine. However, if you open up the hood, you will discover that there are literally nine engines as opposed to two or four. So having these nine engines provides a new level of performance that is unrealizable today with current technology.”
The servers will run the Linux operating system. And that may lead to desktop systems that use the Cell processor as well. Dave Turek is IBM’s VP of Deep Computing…
”And our expectation, by the way, is that this will penetrate the market just like any other innovative technology. There’ll be a cadre of early adopters who will be characterized by people who have dramatic computational needs, who have a lot of in house capability to make use of new technology. And as they blaze the trail by demonstrating the utility of this kind of technology, you get the next wave of followers that will really drive this dramatically into the market place.”

プレステ３って、いったい、いくらになるんでしょうね。
かなりの高性能のようなので、１０万以上になってもおかしくはないですけど、
家庭用ゲーム機としては、ありえない値段ですよね。
ほかの次世代機としてもそんな値段はありえないので、
４、５万というところで、どうにか、抑えようとするんでしょうかね。
