Can a PDA replace a notebook PC? The head of Motorola thinks so. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today’s technology. Motorola CEO Ed Zander says the company’s new PDA phone dubbed the Q will likely go on sale before the end of March….and he thinks it makes a pretty good substitute for a notebook PC….
“It’s your PC. I might be wrong here, over the next five years, the devices you see out there begin to take part of the total time away from the usage of a PC. I use my PC probably 30 percent less a day and 30 percent less a week, maybe more, because I have Q. Like I travel overnight, I don’t take my PC anymore because I don’t need it. All I need is my mail, my calendar, my contact list and Internet access. People in Korea today do banking from these things. They open car doors from these things. Kids are gaming in Japan. People in Italy are watching TV on these things. In Korea, for 14.95 a month you can watch TV.” Are U.S. consumers different or just slower to adopt? “We don’t have the networks. If you want to know what’s going on…I hate to say this because it’s going to sound not very good, what I’m about to say. If you want to know what’s happening in mobility and in mobile communications, get out of the U.S.”
