Adobe adds some new elements. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today’s technology. The number one company in the graphic design software business is out with new packages for consumers…updated versions of PhotoShop and Premiere Elements. Senior product manager Mark Dahm…

“The big emphasis in this version, version 4, we wanted to come up with lots of great ways for people to share photos because for many people, the experience isn’t about how great the editing experience and hours spent editing is. It’s really about when you go to share and you want other people to look at what you’ve done and be proud of that.”

Key to that is an improved slide show creator….an area where Microsoft held an edge with the PhotoStory function in its Digital Image Suite. Now, Dahm says…

“Not only did we add panning and zooming, but we added an additional level of flexibility that really characterizes the elements product as well. We give people a nice, broad access to some controls and when the customers wants to dig down and go a little bit deeper, Elements is, for the most part, deep enough that they can continue to grow and learn with the product. And the same is true with our slide show editor and pan-zoom. We have, for pan-zoom, the ability to define not just one or two spots, but any number of spots that they want.”

Microsoft may still hold the edge when it comes to ease of use, but Adobe gives customers more room to grow. PhotoShop Elements version 4 sells for 99 dollars. A bundled package with a new version of Premier Elements…for digital video, is 149. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I’m Fred Fishkin.

Flash memory drives…get smarter. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today’s technology. Some of the biggest makers of those small USB flash memory drives have banded together to create software that will make the drives even more useful. The drives, which have dropped in price and increased in capacity….are handy for transporting files from computer to computer. A company called U3, a partnership of SanDisk, M-Systems and others, is making the drives capable of running applications for browsing the Web, checking email and more. U3 VP Andrea Butter says the idea is …you plug the device into a USB port….and it transforms that PC into your personal machine…

”I carry a program that synchronizes with my Microsoft Outlook. Now I can carry my Outlook files on my smart drive. I leave my laptop at home. I go to the office with this tiny drive, I plug it into my desktop machine at the office, use my email all day, and in the evening, I take the smart drive out, take it back. Then I can sit with my laptop on my sofa, in front of the TV, and still process the same email on the same U3 smart drive.”

In addition to convenience, the drives add security. You’re bringing your personal files with you. In addition to Email and virus protection applications, USB drives may include software to play MP3, edit and display digital photos, and instant message. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I’m Fred Fishkin.

A new Office with new Windows. Microsoft talks about 2006. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today’s technology. Microsoft announced a reorganization this week…that it hopes will help it move more quickly than it has in the past. The long delayed next version of Windows….named Vista…won’t arrive until at least the middle of next year….and with it…a new version of Office. Office 12. Senior product manager Dan Leach…

”With Windows Vista and Office 12…they’re both major releases in their own right, but together, we really believe it represents a giant step forward both in terms of what people will be able to do with software and developers can build and how they can deliver in the next generation in computing.”

With each successive version of Office….Microsoft has added new features. So much so….the many if not most users don’t know they are there or how to use them. Leach says Office 12 aims to change that…

”We ended up creating a new ribbon across the top of the document …of the application if you will. A lot of people say they know that Office has the capability to do more stuff but they don’t have the time to look for it. Well we want to solve that problem by using this new, very graphical user interface.”

Leach says the next version of Office won’t require the next version of Windows, but he adds ….Microsoft’s bread and butter programs will work better together. Again…. They aren’t due to arrive until the second half of next year. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I’m Fred Fishkin.

Lenovo takes on Dell and Hewlett Packard. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today’s technology. The number one PC maker in China…which bought IBM’s personal computer business this year….is looking to take business away from its rivals…expanding into the small business and consumer markets. Chief Marketing Officer Deepak Advani, who is one of many former IBM PC employees who moved to Lenovo, says Lenovo will grow by being better than Dell, HP and others…in research and customer service…

”Strategy in my mind is really all about focus. Because when we look at our position that we have in China today, we serve consumers, we serve businesses of all sizes and we have a very large market share. Our strategy going forward is that in emerging markets we’re going to focus on consumers more aggressively, in mature markets, we believe there’s a huge, untapped opportunity for us in the small businesses. Given, when we were part of IBM that wasn’t the sweet spot to go after small businesses. So as a result, our share in that segment isn’t as high as our share in mid market and large enterprise customers. And down the road, over time, absolutely consumers would be a focus.”

Lenovo plans to use the upcoming Winter Olympics in Torino to make consumers worldwide more aware of its brand. It has the right to use the IBM name on its computers for five years. But Advani tells us….that name may vanish more quickly than that. And American consumers may see Lenovo PDAs and cell phones as well. The company won’t give a time frame….but it is laying the groundwork already. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I’m Fred Fishkin.

Microsoft pushes keyboards for comfort. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today’s technology. It has been more than a decade since Microsoft first came out with its Natural keyboard with a split, curved design. The idea is to help prevent carpal tunnel syndrome….and reduce strain. Now the company is out with what it calls the Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000. Dan Odell is a staff ergonomist….affectionately known as Dr. Dan around Microsoft…

”And I personally am really excited about this keyboard because it’s the first major ergonomic breakthrough that we’ve offered in ten years…since the Natural line of keyboards came out.” Now describe for us how it is different. It looks like the front end of it is raised up.. “This keyboard is really designed to do two things for you. Number one, it’s designed to improve your wrist posture and number two, it’s designed to try to make it easier on your fingers while you’re typing. So the first thing that you notice is the palm lift on the front of the keyboard. And what that’s designed to do is push people’s palms up while they’re typing, to prevent them from dropping them down.”

When it comes to repetitive strain injuries…some people get them more easily than others. Women, are more susceptible than men. And more time at the keyboard is more risk. The suggested price for the Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 400 is 65 dollars. Another new model is the Comfort Curve Keyboard 2000. It looks a little less radical….takes less getting used to and sells for about 25 dollars.

A keyboard and mouse built for gamers. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today’s technology. Logitech…the world’s biggest maker of computer mice…has been looking for ways to sell more expensive versions of its products. One answer… gamers. People who are willing to pay more for souped up PCs and speaker system, don’t mind springing for any kind of peripheral that will enhance their gaming experience. Logitech’s Ruben Mookerjee says the new G 15 keyboard is a perfect example…

”It’s got 18 macro keys which can be programmed in three bangs. It also has a backlit keyboard so in dim lighting conditions you can still see your keys in your Quake shootout. It has an LCD display, which is an auxiliary display so it will show in game information as well as auxiliary information.”

All things that matter to the serious gamers among us…who would be willing to pay the 80 dollar price tag. And they also might want a new mouse in the house…like the G5 …that lets you adjust sensitivity on the fly…

”So it means if I’m in a life or death situation in Quake, I want it really twitchy. But if I’m trying to navigate through menus, and I’ve had a few too many coffees, I’d like a much slower set up.”

The price, about 70 dollars. For non-gamers….Logitech has updated its cordless desktop line. The S 510 with a media remote for controlling music, pictures and video….sells for about a hundred dollars. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I’m Fred Fishkin.

High tech bling. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today’s technology. That’s what Hitachi is calling new miniature hard drives. The company has come out with the industry’s smallest one inch hard drive….and a slimmer, lighter 1.8 inch drive as well. Becky Smith…VP at Hitachi Storage Technologies…

”What we’ve done is we’ve shrunk the size of both drives, which translates to less weight for your MP3s, We’ve increased the capacity…being able to store anywhere between 30 and 30 thousand songs, improved power management by as much as 37 percent, which translates to increased battery life, and we have better shock protection.”

The drives, dubbed Mikey and Slim, will be used in a variety of devices from digital music players to cell phones. The tiny one inch Mikey…can store up to eight gigabytes. The company faces competition from Toshiba and Seagate….and from companies that make flash memory…

”There’s always a market for flash but we think that consumers are saying that they want unlimited amounts of storage. And so if you look at the price per gigabyte …really a hard drive has a clear advantage over the flash market.”

The new drives include a drop sensor to prevent data loss in the event of an accident. The company calls it ESP or extra sensory protection. Hitachi says the new drives will go out to consumer electronics companies this fall…and devices using them will follow. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I’m Fred Fishkin.

The long awaited iTunes cell phone. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today’s technology. Cingular Wireless has begun selling the Motorola Rokr….the first phone capable of connecting to Apple’s iTunes software and playing songs in Apple’s proprietary format. While that alone may attract lots of customers…the phone itself bears no resemblance to a typical iPod. It looks much like any other candy bar style phone. You push a button with a musical note icon….to bring up an iPod style music menu. Cingular’s Ellen Webner….

“What’s special about the iTunes phone is that you can download songs from the iTunes software, from the iPod music library. You have to think of the phone as just becoming another folder in your iTunes library and it’s a way for you to take your songs with you as well as have a wireless phone that also works in the United States and overseas and has a camera built into it.”

But the camera…capable of video and still pictures…is only VGA resolution. And while the music is stored on a 512 megabyte TransFlash memory card….Apple limits you to storing only one hundred songs at a time on the phone. Most owners of portable players will tell you…that’s not enough. Cingular expects buyers will probably be people who already own iPods…

”I think there are 21 million iPod users out there, so primarily this is a great device for them.”

If you get a call while your rocking out to the Rokr….the music pauses automatically to let you answer. Cingular is selling it for 250 dollars with a two year contract. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I’m Fred Fishkin.

A new standard for networks…that uses the electrical wiring in your home. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today’s technology. The HomePlug standard for using existing wiring for computer networks…has been around for a few years. And while it works fine for most kinds of applications…sharing Internet connections and music and photos….it hasn’t provided a big enough pipeline for sharing video files. But a new standard, called HomePlug AV, is poised to change that. Andy Melder is Senior VP at Intellon Corporation….a company that makes chips used in the technology…

”The standard was approved by the HomePlug board of directors. HomePlug AV is the standard that’s been developed over the last year and a half. And it really extends the performance of HomePlug technology to the 200 megabit per second class range.”

Fast enough to share high definition video files over a home network. Melder says the first products using the technology should begin to arrive during the first few months of next year….followed by a variety of consumer electronics devices with HomePlug AV built in. And while wireless networks have gained in popularity….and certainly won’t go away…. wired networks are less prone to interference and can deliver better overall performance. New notebooks from Sony. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today’s technology. Sony…which is best known for TVs and other consumer electronics…is trying to win corporate customers for its notebook computers. VP of Vaio product marketing Micahel Abary…says among the new features…

”We’re integrating a biometric sensor into every one of these BX notebooks. And what that biometric sensor allows a user to do is to basically replace up to 25 passwords that they might have to remember in many applications that require a password and instead utilize just a swipe of their finger to gain access to that application.”

Some models also include built in cameras that can be used with a subscription based video conferencing service…or with other Web cam software, a feature that consumers, other than business customers, may like as well. Sony thinks there may be an opportunity for it to gain ground in the notebook PC business….with the takeover of IBM’s personal computer business by China’s Lenovo…

”That takeover of the IBM PC company by Lenovo is an opportunity for Sony, and the reason why I say that is we’ve heard from some of our customers that there is concern about that particular situation.”

Pricing for the new line starts at about 13 hundred dollars. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I’m Fred Fishkin.

When it comes to TVs…the world has gone flat. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today’s technology. Sharp, which was the first in the business in selling LCD TVs with its Aquos line….is facing lots of competiton these days. Senior Marketing VP Bob Scaglione….

”We estimate probably 60 or 70 different brands out there of liquid crystal televisions. Sharp still maintains over 30 percent market share even with the variety of different brands that are out there.”

Sharp is betting on LCD to win the battle over plasma technology...even though it is still a more expensive way to produce big flat screens for home theatres. The company is introducing a new 37 inch model for about 33 hundred dollars. A giant new 65 inch LCD TV has a suggested retail price of 21 thousand. Sounds like a lot…but, says Scaglione….prices have been coming down…

”The excitement in the industry seems to be in flat panel and with that comes an interest in buying these products…and economies of scale have kicked in. Meaning as people buy more flat panel products, the prices of those flat panels are moving down at a faster rate.”

Again…Sharp is facing lots of competition…with some manufacturers selling smaller screen LCD TVs for 500 dollars or less. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I’m Fred Fishkin.

Sprint and Nextel together. What it means to consumers. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today’s technology. With Sprint’s 36 billion dollar purchase of Nextel complete, the combined company is beginning an advertising blitz and has transformed its stores. Chief Operating Officer Len Lauer tells us…

”Well the challenges will be really just differentiating our company as opposed to legacy Sprint or legacy Nextel. To get the new brand for the company, we’ve adopted the yellow and black colors. We have a new logo. And to tell our customers that really, your services aren’t going to change but we’re going to bring a lot of new capabilities to you. So the challenge is really getting that message out to our over 44 million customers.”

The company has set up war rooms to deal with customer issues. Some of the changes… Sprint is now offering plans that include free incoming minutes. A page from Nextel’s strategy. And it hopes to compete with Verizon in the high speed Internet access business…by offering free wireless cards to customers signing up for two year plans. Verizon Wireless recently cut the price of its unlimited wireless broadband service to 60 dollars a month. Lauer says….Sprint will be competitive. And new ads refer to the company as not just being in the communications business…but in the entertainment business as well…

”We are the leader in the U.S. with data services. A lot of these data services are entertainment oriented, whether it’s games, whether it’s music. So we see ourselves getting positioned more and more as an entertainment company along with being a great communications company.”

With the goal being to take business from larger rivals Cingular and Verizon. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I’m Fred Fishkin.

The easy way to share digital music around the house. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today’s technology. There are plenty of devices on the market these days that allow you to use your home network to link files on your PC….to your TV or stereo system for listening to digital music and viewing pictures or videos. If your needs are strictly music…and you have some money to spare….a company called Sonos has an easy to use solution. A handheld hub with an LCD screen lets you direct music to ZonePlayers around the house. Sonos co-founder Tom Cullen….

”Pick a room, pick a song, press play. You can have ten players in your house playing ten different songs or you can hit the party mode button and all ten rooms will play the same song at the exact same time and you can do that with as many controllers as you want up to 32 rooms.”

If you can afford it. A package with two ZonePlayers and a controller costs about 12 hundred dollars. You have to supply your speakers. At that price…who is the Sonos system aimed at? Cullen says its not the high end audiophile…

”We’re in a funny place in that we’re about one-fifth or one-fourth the price of a custom system and many of our users install it themselves.”

The ease of setting up the system is what Sonos has done better than anyone else…and the controller has the look and feel of an oversized iPod. The system works with both Windows and Mac computers. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I’m Fred Fishkin.

Turning your PC into a golf simulator. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today’s technology. It’s not the first time my computer has gotten me teed off. But this time it was fun. A company called Electric Spin has created the most realistic golf simulation device for home computers to date…. The Golf Launchpad. It’s a solidly built pad that’s kind of like the tee at a driving range….with the ball tethered to a swiveling metal base. You swing with your own golf clubs…and sensors detect how you’ve hit the ball. Electric Spin CEO Anees Munshi….

”The system then optically tracks your swing, observes the moment of impact with the ball, analyzes that for things such as club speed, acceleration, path, face angle, all of those things…computes where the ball would have gone … then sends the data to the PC and you can visualize your shot in Tiger Woods 2004 which comes with the Launchpad…and ’05 and ’06 will be compatible as well.”

Until now, the Golf Launchpad, which sells for about 250 dollars, has been available mostly in Golf Pro shops. Munshi says it will arrive in consumer electronics stores later this year and a version for PlayStation game consoles will be available as well. Electric Spin does have competition….Xavix is out with a golf game for its own console. It does not use real clubs….and does not work with third party software. A flash memory camcorder….with professional features. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today’s technology. There are lots of little camcorders on the market these days…that record video onto flash memory cards….some of them pretty inexpensive. Brand new, at the high end, is the SDR-S100 from Panasonic. It’s the SD camcorder with a 3 CCD sensor. That’s the same technology that has been used in professional broadcast cameras for years. National camcorder marketing manager Rudy Vitti…says while Panasonic has been selling its D-Snap line of SD camcorders…and others have introduced similar models….

“The quality of those types of devices haven’t been up to par. But this is a true camcorder. It records high quality, MPEG-2, which is the same format that records on DVD, DVD recorders and DVD camcorders. With this device, we’ve actually improved the MPEG-2 encoding so that it’s more efficient and it gives you a higher image quality. So we’re able actually to fit over an hour of high quality video on a 2 gigabyte SD card.”

The inclusion of a 2 gigabyte memory card is one reason why the small, palm sized camera carries a pretty big price tag. About 12 hundred dollars. It should arrive in stores next month. The advantages to recording to SD memory instead of tape…

”Obviously there’s the size. Because the media itself is so small we’re able to make the devices that record to it small. Secondly, it’s more rugged.”

And video files can simply be dragged and dropped onto a PC for editing. Panasonic has competition. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I’m Fred Fishkin.

The AARP and video games. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today’s technology. If you think 15 year old boys are the only ones out there hooked on video and computer games….you’ll be surprised at what the AARP has to say. The organization’s magazine is out with lists of game suggestions for people over 50. And says features editor Ken Budd….

”The average video game player is now 30 years old, even that’s a little older than you might expect. 19 percent are now 50 and older, it was 9 percent in 1999. But probably the real surprising stat is that women over 40 spend more time playing games online than any other age group including teenage boys. And they’re mainly playing puzzles and card games and that sort of thing.”

And Budd says game makers are starting to take notice. Especially since the percentages are likely to climb…

”From what we hear from people in the industry, they realize what a huge market this is and you’ll be seeing more games geared towards this group. And it’s interesting, because I think what you’ve got going on here is you’ve got, first off, kind of the Pong generation that grew up on video games in the 70s, they’re comfortable with them. They still find them call…and so they’re not necessarily dropping this as they hit their 40s and 50s.”

And again, the surprise is, online gaming is most popular among women over 40. Video games…it would seem….have come of age. You can find us, at BootCamp.com. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I’m Fred Fishkin.

A satellite radio…that doubles as an MP3 player. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today’s technology. New details on the partnership between XM Satellite Radio, Samsung and Napster. The new device being built by Samsung….is tiny….and includes built in flash memory…either half a gigabyte or a full gigabyte…..that can be used for recording songs from XM….or for storing and playing your own collection of MP3s. And through the partnership with Napster…music recorded from XM….that you want to keep permanently, can be purchased. How well that business model works remains to be seen…..but the device itself…has plenty of gee-whiz factor. Dinesh Moorjani is Samsung’s senior manager of new business development…

”It’s about, maybe less than half the size of the current Delphi Tower XM to Go product. And what it does is it marries the best of music discovery with the best of music consumption. So it allows users to discover music that they wouldn’t have ordinarily found by managing their existing music collection with MP3s, but bringing that together with the ability to record, save and intermingle XM program content.

On the downside, there is no memory card slot to add to the storage capacity. Samsung says the one gigabyte model will be able to hold about 750 songs recorded from XM’s channels. We don’t yet know how much the device…scheduled to arrive later this year…will cost. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I’m Fred Fishkin.

Can your PC help to reduce stress? Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today’s technology. Lots of people might blame computers for increasing stress levels. Notebook PCs…mean you can take your work with you wherever you go. The Wild Divine Project is trying to counter that, with a game that uses biofeedback. Marketing VP Wendy Goldner says the package comes with sensors that are worn on three fingers…and you advance in the game by learning to control your breathing and heart rate…to relax….

”It’s beautiful animated 3D graphics. You’ll really enjoy being in the program. And the training is quite beneficial. The concept is to train you to use these techniques in everyday life. So we’re not asking anybody to take all their meditation, all their relaxation and to be fixed on their computer the rest of their lives. What we’re suggesting is, 20 minutes of practice 3 or 4 times a week to be able to really learn these techniques that you can use in the real world. So now I’m on the bus, I’m crowded, I’m walking into a meeting with my boss, whatever it is that might produce that anxiety in me, I have these breathing and these meditation techniques that I do on my own to get myself into a real calm, centered place that I can be in my peak effectiveness both mentally and physically.

The first package from Wild Divine…which includes the biofeedback hardware…sells for about 160 dollars. New add on software titled WisdomQuest…is about 60 dollars. You can find more information at WildDivine.com. You can find us at BootCamp.com. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I’m Fred Fishkin.

Protecting your identity. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today’s technology. A company called Intelius has carved out a niche in the online information business. For varying fees, it can find phone numbers, even of people who have unlisted numbers. And it also offers a background check service. Now, it is also selling a tool called ID Watch…that provides a daily monitor that promises to serve as an early warning system to prevent identity theft. The company’s Paul Cook…

“Most solutions to this ID theft problem are after the fact. They’ll let you know, a credit bureau may let you know that a credit line has been opened in your name. And when in fact maybe it hasn’t. And so, what we think is that changes in addresses and changes in social security associations and changes in phone numbers, etcetera, usually precede an ID theft. So we think we can provide not only the service of monitoring your credit, which is something we do with ID Watch, but Intelius also thinks that you can provide an early warning system to alert someone if ID theft may be something that they’re at major risk of.”

Pricing depends on the length of a subscription…varying between five and ten dollars per month. That includes 25 thousand dollars worth of ID theft insurance. You can find more information at Intelius.com. You can find us at BootCamp.com. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I’m Fred Fishkin.
